‘To see what is happening and ability to act upon that’

December. Time to reflect. In july Jan Johansson died. One of the inspirators of the IOD; International Institute for Organisational and Social Development. I participated in the 1994-1995 Professional Development Programme. I remember Jan as a man of ‘soft no nonsens’. Still I use his view on Competence; ‘To see what is happening and ability to act upon that’.

Jan went on with ‘The competence shortcomings’:

‘ You don’t see what is happening and therefor you can’t act’

‘You see what is happening without knowledge or courage to do what is needed to be done’.

‘You don’t understand what is happening but act anyway, according to your standard repertoire’.

‘Dysfunction in the organisation prevent competence to be utilised’.

Thank you Jan.
